Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Candidates for eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, are typically those looking to address drooping eyelids, bags under the eyes, or hooding over the eyes that may impair vision. Ideal candidates are generally healthy non-smokers.

During your consultation, it's important to tell your medical team if you have an eye disease such as glaucoma, cardiovascular disease, a thyroid disorder or diabetes, as each can affect healing.

The procedure is generally performed as an outpatient surgery with general anesthetic.  Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper, lower, or both eyelids.  For upper blepharoplasty, an incision is made within the natural fold of the eyelid to remove excess skin.  For lower blepharoplasty, the incision is usually made just below the lash line or inside the eyelid to redistribute excess fat and/or remove excess skin.  Once the desired reshaping is achieved, the incisions are closed with fine sutures to minimize scarring.

Recovery from eyelid surgery usually involves some bruising and swelling around the eyes, which typically subsides within one to two weeks. As your nerves heal, you may experience numbness and discomfort at the incision site(s) including tightness and itching. Ice packs can be used in the initial days to minimize swelling, and patients may be given eye drops to help keep the eyes lubricated. Most patients can return to normal activities within seven to 10 days but should avoid strenuous activities for several weeks.

The results of eyelid surgery can be significantly rejuvenating, offering a more alert and youthful appearance. Improvements can be seen as soon as the swelling and bruising diminish. The outcomes of eyelid surgery are long-lasting.
