Abdominoplasty

Candidates for abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, have excess skin and fat on the abdomen that has not improved through diet and exercise. This condition often occurs after significant weight loss, pregnancy or aging.

Ideal candidates should be at or near their ideal body weight, in good overall health and have realistic expectations about achievable results. It's important for potential patients to understand that abdominoplasty is not a weight loss procedure but rather a contouring surgery. Candidates are non-smokers or those willing to quit smoking, as smoking can impair healing and increase the risk of complications during and after surgery.

The tummy tuck involves several key surgical steps to enhance the appearance of the abdominal area. A long incision is made across the lower abdomen, just above the pubic area.  In addition, there is an incision around the navel. The skin is lifted to expose the underlying abdominal muscles. These muscles are typically tightened with sutures to create a firmer abdominal wall. After securing the muscles, excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin is re-draped to achieve a smoother contour.

The technique is designed to provide a tighter, flatter abdomen and a more defined waistline. Liposuction can be added to additional areas of concern on the trunk to help achieve optimal results.  This is typically best suited for excess adiposity/fat to the flanks and bra roll areas.

When recovering from a tummy tuck, patients can expect some swelling, bruising and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication. If needed, Dr. Tieman, our board-certified plastic surgeon, may insert drains to prevent fluid accumulation. These drains are typically removed within a week or two after surgery. Patients undergoing this procedure will wear a compression garment for several months to support healing and minimize swelling.

We advise most patients to take at least two weeks off from work and to avoid strenuous activities, including heavy lifting and vigorous exercise, for six weeks. Walking is encouraged soon after surgery to promote blood circulation and aid in recovery. Full recovery can take several months, during which time patients should see gradual improvement in swelling and the contour of their abdomen. Regular follow-up visits will monitor progress and address any concerns during the recovery phase.

Tummy tuck results can significantly enhance the abdominal profile by creating a flatter, more toned stomach area. Patients often notice a marked improvement in the appearance of their abdomen as excess skin and fat are removed and the underlying muscles are tightened. The final contour is more aestheticly pleasing and often helps patients feel more confident in their body image.

Patients undergoing this procedure will want to maintain a stable weight to preserve the results, as significant weight fluctuations can alter outcomes. While surgical scars are permanent, they will be hidden by underwear or swimwear and will generally fade over time with proper care.
