Candidates for liposuction are typically individuals who are close to their ideal body weight yet struggle with localized areas of fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise. These stubborn areas often include the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms and neck.

Ideal candidates should have good quality, firm skin to achieve optimal results, as liposuction removes fat but does not tighten skin. It is important for potential patients to have realistic expectations about what liposuction can achieve. It is not a weight-loss procedure but rather a body contouring method designed to refine and reshape specific areas.

Candidates should be in good overall health.  They should also be non-smokers or willing to quit smoking, as smoking can impair healing and increase the risk of complications. Engaging in a stable lifestyle with regular exercise and a balanced diet is crucial for maintaining the results of the procedure.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to remove unwanted fat from specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms or neck, to provide a more enhanced and contoured shape. The procedure begins with administering general anesthesia.

Once the anesthesia takes effect, Dr. Tieman, our board-certified plastic surgeon, will make small incisions in targeted areas and insert a thin tube known as a cannula. Following this, a medicated solution, called tumescent, is injected into the target areas to facilitate fat removal and minimize blood loss. After the fat is removed, the incisions will be closed. Recovery garments are applied to support the treated areas and minimize swelling as the body heals.

The liposuction recovery process varies depending on the extent of the procedure and the individual's health. Generally, patients can expect a period of swelling and bruising in the treated areas. To manage swelling and aid the body's natural contouring process, patients wear compression garments for several months.

Patients should expect some discomfort and bruising following liposuction.  Pain and discomfort can be controlled with prescribed medications or over-the-counter pain relievers. We advise most patients to take one week off from work and to avoid strenuous activities, including heavy lifting and vigorous exercise, for several weeks while your incisions heal.

It's crucial to follow our post-operative instructions closely, including attending follow-up appointments to allow us to monitor your recovery and minimize the risk of complications. The results of liposuction will gradually become apparent as the swelling subsides over the next few months, revealing a more sculpted and toned body shape.

Liposuction can be transformative, resulting in a more sculpted and defined appearance in areas that previously held stubborn fat deposits. Once the swelling and bruising subside — a process that can take several weeks to months — the full effects of the procedure become evident. While liposuction removes fat cells permanently, it does not prevent future weight gain.
