Brachioplasty (Upper Arm Lift)

Candidates for brachioplasty, commonly known as an arm lift, are typically individuals with excess skin in their upper arms, often because of significant weight loss or natural aging.

Ideal candidates are those who maintain a stable weight, are in good overall health and do not smoke, as smoking can complicate both the surgery and the recovery process. Candidates should have realistic expectations about the results and be committed to leading a healthy lifestyle post-surgery to maintain their new contour.

During a brachioplasty procedure, patients undergo general anesthesia.  Following this, Dr. Tieman, our board-certified plastic surgeon, will make incisions on the inner aspect or backside of the arm.  The incision typically extends from the underarm to the elbow, allowing for maximum skin removal.

Excess skin and fat are removed, while the underlying supportive tissue is tightened and reshaped to create a more toned look. If needed, liposuction may be used to remove excess fat and improve the overall shape of the arm. The skin is then smoothed over the new contour of the arm, and the incisions are closed with sutures.

Recovery from brachioplasty usually involves a period of swelling and bruising, with initial healing taking several weeks. Patients wear compression garments to minimize swelling and support the new contours of the arms. Pain and discomfort can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication. Most patients return to work and light daily activities within one to two weeks but should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for six weeks. Follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor the healing process and manage potential complications.

Arm lift results are visible almost immediately, though initially obscured by swelling and bruising. As healing progresses, patients will notice a more toned and defined appearance of their upper arms. The scars, while permanent, will mature and fade over time and are typically placed in less visible areas of the arm. With proper post-operative care, the results of an arm lift are long-lasting. Patients are encouraged to maintain a stable weight and follow a healthy lifestyle to preserve the outcomes of the surgery, as significant weight gain or loss can alter the appearance of the arms.
